How to self Promote!

First, CONGRATULATIONS on taking the first step towards improving your income and getting the lifestyle you have always wanted!

You have joined at the right time, remote worker and offshore workers are becoming more and more popular with startup business and small business, this is further helped by the COVID situation, remote working is becoming the new norm.

How do you give yourself the best chance?

This is a competitive market, the first thing you need is an opening paragraph that describes you and makes you stand out, get right into talking about what you have done, what you can offer, something like “In my last role I was able to save my client 20% on the hours spent maintaining their social media account because…”

Tell them what they will gain from you.

In the Skills section spell out your skills, such statements as “Sales” will not help you, be more specific, such as “Expert with MS Word”, “Facebook, Social Media Content Writing”. Keep it clear and stay away from abbreviations, you are advertising your services globally, make sure everybody can understand your skills.

For the rates, do not overprice yourself, yes you are going up against people from different countries some will command a higher value than offers, but the employer will know this and will have a budget. But on the same hand don’t underprice yourself, for example I know that USA companies pay on average $8 per hour for a VA, but some will pay more, and some will pay less, I also know that if you use other platforms, they will charge you 20% of your income, we don’t, we do not agree with this policy, factor this in and add this to your rate, I would therefore suggest that nobody should be below $5 USD an hour. But to expect to be paid the same no matter where you come from is not realistic, some employers only want remote offshore workers because they know they can pay less and still get a good quality of services, and they know the cost of living is less.

Be prepared to spend money, as a VA you will be responsible for ensuring you have a computer that is able to perform the work, the required software, a stable work environment and you will need to subscribe to some platforms. Remember all businesses have to spend money when they start, some you will recover very quickly, the subscription for example to Virtual Staff, this is something you can turn on and turn off as required, and after 1 week’s work, and not paying the 20% commission, you will more than cover the cost. Other items will be more expensive, your work environment etc.

Please revisit your profile and make sure you have the best possible chance of success.
